COMELEC opens mall voter registration in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The Commission on Elections has opened more accessible offsite voter registration area to cater to residents of the city of Baguio in preparation for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections set in October 2023.

COMELEC Baguio City Election Officer Atty. John Paul Martin said that the COMELEC in partnership with the SM City Baguio opened the Mall Voter Registration starting on January 3 until January 31, 2023, the last day of voter registration set by the COMELEC.

The mall registration area is located at the SM City Baguio Level 3 Sunset Terraces and is open from 8:00AM to 5:00PM from Monday to Saturday.

Martin said the mall voter registration would accommodate new registration, transfer, reactivation of records, reinstatement and correction of record entries.

For the barangay elections, applicants should be 18 years old and above, Filipinos residing in the Philippines for at least one year, and residing in the area where he/she is looking to get registered for at least six months prior to Election Day.

For the SK, applicants must be Filipino, aged between 15 to 30 years old, and residing in the area where he/she is looking to get registered for at least six months prior to Election Day.

Registrants are advised to bring with them identification documents like birth, baptismal or marriage certificate and valid ID such as such as National ID (PhilSys), passport, driver's license, employment ID, student ID or library card signed by the management of the school, college or university, Senior Citizens ID, Person with Disability ID, Indigenous Peoples Certificate from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, and notarized barangay certification with applicant's photo and signature.

Martin encourages qualified registrants for the barangay and SK elections to register earlier to avoid long queues days on later days of the registration period.

COMELEC Chairman George Erwin M. Garcia earlier   called on all qualified voters to avail of their continuing program before the voter registration ends on January 31, 2023.

The COMELEC targets to add about 1.5 to 2 million new voters by the end of the registration period by encouraging more applicants to register earlier than the deadline thru its various programs such as satellite registration and the Register Anywhere Project.

In Baguio City, Martin said they are targeting at least additional 5,000 new registrants for the offsite mall registration.

As of December 2022, Baguio City has 171,498 total number of registered voters. (JDP/RMC PIA-CAR (COMELEC Baguio photos)
