Iloilo City to pilot ‘Moneybela’ for financial inclusion, digitalization

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Iloilo City government is set to pilot the “Moneybela Barangayan Banking” of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), particularly among the far-off barangays that can hardly access banking services.

This was seamed through a ceremonial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing and program launching here, January 9.

Per presentation, the new package which is the first of its kind mobile human-assisted remote banking service in the country, involves both physical and digital or “phy-gital” blended experiences.

Such community-based initiative allows to expand opportunities by improving access of public to various financial services including banking, bills, payment, remittance, loans, and insurance.

stationed in public transport terminals, public markets, schools, barangay halls, and health centers to maximize its accessibility to people.

Further, RCBC noted during its Moneybela launching that through its DiskarTech application introduced in 2020, consumers from remote areas, including those from micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can open digital savings accounts without the need for an initial deposit and at zero maintaining balance.

Iloilo City mayor Jerry P. Treñas delivers his message during the RCBC's Moneybela Barangayan Banking launch in Iloilo City.

Also, the underserved and unbanked Filipinos in over 42,000 barangays in the country will have access to the same financial services offered by physical banks, such as basic deposit account creation, bill payments, e-load, cash in and cash out, micro insurance, and telemedicine purchase through DiskarTech.

Consumers can also avail safe and affordable loans from different loan providers housed in the mobile application, depending on their preferred interest rates, duration, and other important variables.

RCBC also vouched the users of the safety features the application has with the passcode, one-time pin, and biometrics requirement, ensuring the safety of the account from scammers and hackers.

With this, Iloilo City mayor Jerry P. Treñas lauded the RCBC’s initiative to provide access to banking among the residents in hard-to-reach areas which will, according to him, allow the people to be financially responsible.

He added that Moneybela is "truly an innovation which the city aspires to have more of in the future" as this can optimize the efficiency of the city operations and services while linking to the communities all other interventions provided by the government. (JBG/AGP/PIA6)
