‘Pagdumdom’ distributes 6,585 relief goods to ‘red tide’ areas

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- A total of 6,585 relief goods have been distributed, so far, by the Capiz provincial government through its "Task Force Pagdumdom" to toxic red tide-affected fishermen and fisherfolks in Roxas City and the coastal municipalities.

The assistance is among the provincial government’s initiatives after the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has declared the territorial waters of Roxas City and towns of Panay and Pilar as positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) on Sept. 29, 2022.

A week later, the municipalities of Ivisan, Sapian and President Roxas were added into the red tide -affected LGUs in the province.

The bulk of the relief goods distributed to the beneficiaries was towards the year-end of 2022 as more than 5,000 food packs were allotted for delivery before the new year, said Capiz provincial government Public Information Officer lawyer Luvim Amores.

Each relief food pack contains 10 kilograms of rice, 15 pieces of canned goods and 10 pieces of noodles.

During a relief goods distribution in Pilar town last October, Punong barangays Marilyn Belalo and Norberto Bonilla of Brgys. Binaobawan and Poblacion, respectively, have conveyed their appreciation to Governor Fredenil Castro for the immediate assistance to their PSP-affected constituents.

Reportedly, the assistance came two days after it was asked from the provincial government.

The coastal water of Pilar, President Roxas and Panay towns are still affected by toxic red tide per BFAR Shellfish Bulletin No. 1 series of 2023. However, the coastal water of Roxas City and Sapian Bay, covering the municipal waters of Sapian as well as Ivisan towns, are now free from the toxic red tide as stipulated in the same bulletin.
