Davao City’s Mini Asik Asik Falls off-limits to recreational activities

DAVAO CITY (PIA) - Recreational and leisure activities in (Mini) Asik-Asik Falls located in Barangay Carmen, Baguio District, Davao City are strictly prohibited.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) issued the advisory in light of a recent occurrence of mass wasting (downhill movement of rock and soil due to gravity) on January 15 of this year.

According to the CDRRMO the area was previously assessed on February 23, 2022 due to the occurrence of the same hazard.  Based on the Detailed Flood and Landslide Susceptibility Map of DENR-Mines Geosciences Bureau XI, the area concerned is classified as highly susceptible to landslides.

Mini Asik Asik Falls has become a well-known tourist attraction in Davao City as it resembles the famed Asik Asik Falls in Alamada town in North Cotabato.

With the recent findings tourists visiting the area are at risk of natural hazards such as rock falls, landslides and flooding especially during heavy rainfall.

The prohibition of all recreational activities in the areas identified as landslide and flood-prone was reiterated with Barangays Carmen and Tamayong.

The Barangay Councils of Carmen and Tamayong, Bantay Bukid, and the security cluster were instructed by the CDRRMO to strictly enforce the restriction of leisure activities in (Mini) Asik-Asik Falls.

The Sirib Emergency and Mountain Search and Rescue Auxiliary (SEMSRA) was also tasked to provide assistance for the monitoring activities within the area. (with reports from CDRRMO/PIA RG Alama)
