DPWH repairs damaged concrete deck of Buntun Bridge

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) - -The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 3rd Engineering District is now conducting repairs of the damaged concrete deck of the 54-year old Buntun Bridge, this city.

Engr. Mariano Malupeng, Cagayan 3rd district engineer, said they immediately started the repair works upon the arrival of the construction materials from Manila.

He said a team of engineers from DPWH Central Office will be arriving in the city to conduct a load assessment to look into the structural integrity of the iconic bridge in the province.

To ensure public safety, especially motorists passing through the bridge, Malupeng said, they lessen the bridge's load capacity from 18 tons to 15 tons until the assessment and repair will be completed.

The Buntun Bridge was constructed during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. in 1968. It stretches from Tuguegarao City to Solana, Cagayan and spans the Cagayan River, the largest river basin in the Philippines.

A heavy traffic was experienced by motorists on January 19, 2023 when a hole in the concrete deck of the bridge was noticed.

Buntun Bridge is considered the main bridge spanning the Cagayan River in the province, next to it is the Magapit Bridge in Lallo town. There are two additional bridges that are still under construction, the Amulung Bridge and Camalaniugan Bridge in Amulung and Camalaniugan towns, respectively.

Another bridge, parallel to the Buntun Bridge, was also proposed by 3rd district Representative Joseph "Jojo" Lara, which will connect northern Tuguegarao City to Solana town. If constructed, the Solana-Tuguegarao Bridge will serve as an alternate bridge to the five decade old Buntun Bridge. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
