Gov’t provides P1.6M aid to ASF-affected hog raisers in Iloilo town

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Iloilo Provincial Government has recently turned over a financial assistance amounting to P1.646 million for the 189 hog raisers affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF) in Oton, Iloilo, aiming to regain the hog industry in town.

Beneficiaries were identified through a rigid validation of the Provincial Veterinary Office for the cash assistance, a press release from the DA6 cited.

The Municipal Agriculture Office of Oton has also been instrumental in processing the necessary documents, allowing the hog raisers to avail financial assistance ranging from P7,000 to P30,000 each, depending on the assessed and validated number of the affected hogs.

Side by side, the Department of Agriculture (DA) 6, through its Regional ASF Task Force, also distributed 400  packs of vegetable seeds to the hog raisers during the turnover of cash assistance.

Meanwhile, in his speech during the cash assistance distribution, Iloilo provincial

veterinarian Dr. Darrel Tabuada emphasized that the provincial government is in its “full support to help the hog raisers recuperate this year from their losses due to depopulation, through the lead of the present administration.”

To note, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. has issued an Executive Order No. 011 dated January 14, 2023, stipulating the recovery program among ASF-affected areas, including the crafted processes and guidelines for the recovery of hog raisers in the province.

For his part, Oton municipal mayor Sofronio Fusin, Jr. also reassured the public that the local government is doing its best to help the hog raisers recover from the damage brought about by the ASF incident.

In October last year, the first confirmed case of ASF in Western Visayas was recorded in the area.

Per report, the town has over 500 recorded swine growers and around 3,000 pigs were culled due to ASF infections. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6)
