Dalipe’s first SOCA highlights disaster and prevention response

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Jan 30 (PIA) – The first State of the City Address (SOCA) of Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe on Monday (Jan 30), highlights the plans on disaster and prevention response due to the recent consecutive flooding incident in the city.

In the past three months, the city experienced three major flood events during Typhoon Paeng, around Christmas time on December, and the recent Low Pressure Area earlier this year. Over 50 barangays were affected by these three flood incidents, displacing 47,338 individuals and 18,017 families.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office responded with rescues, and transfers to evacuation centers, while the City Social Welfare and Development Office spearheaded the provision of food and necessities of the evacuees on the day of the flood.

“There is no question that Filipinos are resilient, Zamboangueños most especially,” Mayor Dalipe said.

Mayor Dalipe, with the coordination of the Department of Public Works and Highways, is bent on prioritizing the construction of a multi-staged, massive flood control project this year, covering the riverbanks along the San Bernardino Bridge in Tetuan- Guiwan area, down to Barigon Bridge in Tugbungan, and eventually all other rivers.

The mega riprap is for flood control, to ensure safety of the residents residing near our rivers control and to provide a lane for vehicles travelling along the river. Roads and bridges in East Coast and West Coast will be reinforced following the recent floods.

Resettlement areas for riverside residents have already been identified, with 292 lots available in Azcuna Mercedes, 172 lots in Tulungatung, and 350 lots in Talisayan.

“Na problema de basura, ta puede kita compone adentro de veinte cuatro hora. El cosa posible hace, ta hace dayun. Este el tatak de Team Performance,” Mayor Dalipe emphasized.

(In terms of garbage problem, we can solve it within 24 hours. We will immediately do whatever is possible. This is the brand of Team Performance)

City Budget Office reports the budget release for 131 projects in fiscal year 2022, amounting to a total of 1.406 billion pesos, for building schools, markets, roads, flood control systems, seaports, parks, buildings and aquaculture.

“I have directed all departments to practice fiscal discipline and sustainability, to use our funds when needed, as needed, and balancing our current needs for our future growth as a city,” Mayor Dalipe said. (RVC/EDT/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
