BFAR, PCG warn fishermen on illegal purse seine fishing in Balatan waters

NAGA CITY (PIA) – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), together with the Philippine Coast Guard, intensifies fisheries protection and law management through a recent joint seaborne operation which resulted in the apprehension of a medium-scale commercial fishing vessel within the municipal waters of Balatan, Camarines Sur, Friday dawn.

The said vessel was conducting an unauthorized purse seine fishing, and violated RA 10654 sections 86, and 95 or the use of active gear in municipal waters, bays, and other fishery management areas.

BFAR Bicol Regional Director Ariel Pioquinto said that commercial fishing should secure a license or permit from BFAR or the local government unit to be able to do so.

The operation also resulted to the confiscation of four tubs of fishes  amounting to P18,000, and custody of vessel in Pasacao.

Pioquinto also said the “filing of administrative case for the offenders is underway, who may avail settlement, as a matter of right, twice within the three-year period of their license. Thereafter, acceptance of an offer to settle shall be decided upon by the Adjudication Committee.”

BFAR seeks the cooperation of the Bicolanos by reporting any fisheries-related incident. Individuals may reach BFAR 5 – Command Action Center through cp number 09194970286.
