DILG launches ‘BIDA’ Program in WV

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) 6 led the launching of the anti-illegal drugs campaign dubbed as “Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan” (BIDA) Program in Western Visayas.

The launching was jointly done with the conduct of 2022 Regional Anti-Drug Abuse Council (ADAC) Performance Awards here, January 31.

The BIDA Program enjoins the local government units (LGUs), national government agencies (NGAs), and other key sectors of the society to focus on drug demand reduction and rehabilitation in the region.

In a message of DILG secretary Benjamin C. Abalos, Jr., delivered by DILG- Bureau of Local Government Supervision (BLGS) OIC-director Debbie T. Torres, “BIDA” is in line with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. administration’s commitment to continue the campaign against illegal drugs “within the framework of the law and with respect for human rights and

with focus on rehabilitation and socio-economic development.”

Further, the DILG chief cited that the BIDA advocacy banks on the best practices of the preceding programs of the agency against illegal drugs and currently focuses on curbing the problem through demand reduction.

He added that BIDA specifically seeks to strengthen institutions in the implementation of drug reduction activities, encourage multi-sectoral participation, secure commitments from national government agencies and partner organizations, and raise awareness through information, education, and communication (IEC) materials.

For his part, Victorias City mayor and BIDA Ambassador Javier Miguel Benitez signified his support to the anti-illegal drugs campaign, emphasizing the importance of community support in order to mitigate the tendencies of the public to engage in using illegal drugs and in other vices.

During his speech, he encouraged everyone to expand the drive against illegal drugs as he noted that “in this war, we are all victims and casualties; we must take up something to arm ourselves against the evil this enemy (illegal drugs) is spreading.”

Meanwhile, local chief executives, partner government agencies, and other key stakeholders pledged their support to the campaign against illegal drugs in a commitment signing and reading of unity statement held the same day in line with the BIDA Program launching. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6)
