OWWA awards P875k livelihood assistance to 49 Baguio – Benguet OFW returnees

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) - - The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration – Cordillera (OWWA – CAR) awarded a total of P875,000 livelihood assistance to 49 returning (displaced or distressed) Overseas Filipino Workers from Baguio City and Benguet.

OWWA – CAR OIC Regional Director Luzviminda Tumaliuan assisted by Doy Dabilog representing Mayor Benjamin Magalong led the awarding of the livelihood assistance cheques at the OWWA Regional Office here, Monday (January 30).  

Tumaliuan said the assistance is under OWWA’s Balik – Pinas! Balik Hanapbuhay! (BPBH) program that aims to provide immediate relief to the returning OFWs and their families for them to start a business or expand an existing one.

The cost of livelihood assistance ranges from P5,000 (for those who only paid one membership fee); P10,000 for those with two or more membership fee payment, and P20,000 for those with active membership during the time of repatriation.

For the 49 beneficiaries, most of their business proposals are sari – sari store, fish/meat/vegetables selling, hog raising, homemade/process food selling, coffee shops, RTWs buy and sell (ukay -ukay) and online selling. Lara Marie Casiquin of Asin Road Baguio City, an OFW for seven years and repatriated in 2021 because of the COVID – 19 pandemic, lauded OWWA the livelihood assistance which will be a big help for her family.

“Very overwhelming. Bilang member ng OWWA ngayon ko lang nalaman na marami palang programs ang gobyerno na makakatulong sa aming mga OFWs,” she said.  

Casiquin will use the livelihood assistance to expand her current online food selling business, and to start her venture in vegetables selling.

Meanwhile, the OWWA – CAR also recently awarded 22 OFW returnees in Abra a total of P405,000 livelihood assistance; three in Apayao with P60,000 livelihood grant; one in Kalinga with P10,000 assistance; four in Mountain Province with P70,000 and two in Ifugao with P30,000 livelihood assistance.
