Baguio City celebrates Marriage Week on Feb. 7-14

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) - - Highlighting the importance of marriage as a strong foundation of a family, the basic unit in society, the City Government in the February 6 Monday flag raising ceremony launched the celebration of Marriage Week celebration in Baguio.

This year’s Marriage Week celebration adopts the international theme, “One Flesh Given and Received” and also promotes the local theme, “The He – A.R.T. of Marriage – Beating Together as One”.

Leading the Marriage Week celebration is the City Social Welfare and Development Office in partnership with the office of Councilors Elmer Datuin and Leah Fariñas and members of the celebration’s Steering Committee namely the City Health Services Office, Baguio City Police Office, City Public Information Office, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD – CAR), Department of Education (DepEd) – Baguio, Philippine Information Agency, Uplife Movement and the Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Scheduled activities  include marriage enrichment and counselling and renewal of vows activities, forum on “Marriage Forum for a Stronger Family” and “Love, Courtship and Marriage.”  

 Likewise, marriage modular sessions for interested couples and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries; and awarding of gifts/freebies to lucky couples during the scheduled Pre – Marriage Orientation Counselling schedules at the City HSO Conference Hall for the week. A Kapihan sa Baguio media forum  is also set on February 9.

Datuin, chairperson of the City Council Committee on Social Services, Women and Urban Poor, said the celebration is an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family.

“Marriage promotes the common good by building families and nurturing children. It is recognized as the foundation of family life and the preservation and promotion of such institution is vital for the survival of the nation and our city,” he stressed.

Marriage Week is annual event in Baguio by virtue of City Ordinance No. 10, series of 2017 authored by Datuin.

Baguio City remains to be among the favorite wedding destination in the country. Based on the data of the Baguio Civil Registrar Office, there were 1,907 registered marriage in the city last year, a 34.67 percent increase compared to the 1,416 registered marriage in 2021. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
