DA allots P158.2M RCEF cash subsidy to Aklan rice farmers

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) has apportioned a total of P158,205,000.00 Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RFFA) among the smallholder farmers in Aklan this year.

Out of the total allocation, over P77.6 million cash was recently distributed at ABL Sports Complex in Kalibo, Aklan.

A press release from DA6 cited that rice farmers from several towns of Aklan with not more than two-hectare landholding have received the cash grant.

Qualified beneficiaries from Altavas received P11.92 million, P10.76 million for Balete, Batan with P6.56 million, P15.61 million for Libacao, Madalag with P10.92 million, P11.88 million for Malinao, and P10.1 million for New Washington.

The recent payout event was graced by Senator Imee Marcos.

In her speech, Sen. Marcos noted that the government is bound to level up the

support to rice farmers facing climate change and surging prices of farm inputs.

Likewise, she encouraged crop diversification and called for participation in “Kadiwa” business marketing which gives the farmers better access to direct farm-to-consumer food supply chain by allowing producers to earn bigger from directly selling their produce instead of using trader-intermediaries.

Meanwhile, Governor Jose Enrique Miraflores commended the national government's support to boost the rice sector in Aklan, which currently has an 85.79 percent rice self-sufficiency level.

Miraflores added that with Aklan's thrust "Pagkaing Sapat para sa Lahat, Aklan Aangat," he aspires for more significant agricultural interventions for the province through the support of Sen. Marcos.

It could be noted that the RFFA interventions came from the excess of P10 billion Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) tariff revenues amounting to P8,098,302,090.00.

With the highest RFFA allocation nationwide, Western Visayas obtained P1.4 billion in the 2022 budget to serve over 280,000 rice growers regionwide. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6 with report from DA-RAFIS6)
