NTC: Register SIMs attached to electronic devices other than mobile phones

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Region 6 reminded users to register the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) attached not only in their mobile cellular phones but also in their other electronic devices.

Many subscribers in Western Visayas are not yet aware that they also have to register the SIMs installed in their computers, tablets and internet or wi-fi modems, noted NTC 6 legal officer lawyer Deo Virgil Tan during the conduct of the facilitated SIM registration in the different remote areas of the region.

Tan said Republic Act 11934 or the SIM Registration Act requires the registration of SIM for electronic devices by all users.

He urged subscribers to register their SIM cards before the deadline on April 26 this year, unless the registration is extended by the Department of Information and Communications Technology for another 120 days, to avoid deactivation.

“Please exhaust all possible remedies to register your SIM cards. If you do not know, you could ask help from people you trust or visit the branches of telecommunications companies (TelCos) near you or come to our facilitated registration scheduled in your areas,” said Tan.

NTC 6 has already submitted a list of identified remote areas, based on their

location, cell sites and population in the region, to their Central Office, where they will bring next the facilitated SIM registration.

After the municipalities of Carles and Lemery in Iloilo province and Madalag in Aklan, facilitated registrations are set in three more municipalities of the province in Antique this February. These registrations will be held at Pandan Sports Complex in Pandan town on Friday, Feb. 10, at Valderrama Cultural and Tourism Center in Valderrama on Feb. 16, and at the Barbaza Public Plaza in Barbaza on Feb 17.

The three earlier facilitated registrations participated in by TelCos-- Smart, Globe, and DITO, have successfully registered almost 3,000 SIMs – 991 in Carles, 1,003 in Madalag and 983 in Lemery.

Tan thanked the local government units, partner agencies and public telecommunication entities (PTEs) for the support provided to this government initiative organized by NTC aimed to hasten the registration and make it accessible to end-users especially those in the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas and those vulnerable ones.

“The PTEs are making efforts to bring their equipment and devices or establish facilities to cater to their subscribers during the facilitated registration,” said Tan.

SIM users need to bring their government-issued ID and SIM card attached to their mobile cellular device to receive their One Time Pin or verification before the SIM registration.

He also cautioned the public against giving their personal data related to SIM registration to ensure their safety and avoid unauthorized breaches of their personal data.

"Verify first if they are really representatives of telcos or NTC before you engage and give your personal data to them," Tan said. (JBG/laf/PIA6-Iloilo)
