CAMIGUIN (PIA)--"Kami nag-launching diha sa Barangay Baylao; mao na among critical habitat, ang pag-identify sa pawikan dadto sa Baylao is Hawksbill turtle, which is critically endangered siya, aside ana naa pud ta'y Green Sea turtle nga naa diin sa Cantaan ug usahay sa Catarman mao na among monitoron."
(We were the ones that launched in Barangay Baylao; that is where our critical habitat is, and the turtles there were identified as Hawksbill turtles, which are critically endangered; aside from that, we also have a Green Sea turtle in Cantaan and sometimes in Catarman, which is why we monitor them)
During the February 16 radio program "Come Again, Sa Camiguin," Camiguin Forester III Carmelito Z. Babaison discusses the importance of wildlife conservation and the protection of endangered species that coexist on the island.
Since only five of the seven species of marine turtles can be found in the Philippines, DENR Camiguin puts a lot of focus on habitat monitoring, especially for marine sea turtles.
With the implementation of the Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS), the department also hired the "Bantay Lasang," whose job is to protect the wildlife and natural resources in the four municipalities of Mambajao, Catarman, Sagay, and Mahinog.
Before hiking or camping on Mt. Hibok-Hibok, the department recommends that visitors get entry permits, pay environmental fees, and follow the guides' instructions to stay safe.
Since there are fewer travel restrictions and tourist destinations are reopening to the public after the pandemic, DENR advises both visitors and residents to dispose of their trash properly when venturing out to wildlife protected areas. (GKND/PIA-10/Camiguin)
