P15M-oyster processing facility to rise soon in Aklan town

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 through its special project, Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP), reinforced one of its subprojects which is the Oyster Production, Processing, and Marketing Enterprise through the establishment of the P14,957,837.17-worth oyster processing facility in Altavas, Aklan.

Earlier this month, the Provincial Project Management and Implementing Unit (PPMIU) of Aklan commenced the construction of the infrastructure component of the project with its ceremonial groundbreaking.

The project will be managed by the Altavas Small Fishermen's Association (ASFA) and Tinagong Dagat Fishermen's Association (TDFA).

Particularly, the oyster processing facility will be utilized to produce communal fresh oyster employing a “raft module technology” to lessen the environmental

setback of siltation being one of the by-products of processing mollusks with silt residues.

Meanwhile, the marketing enterprise of the project will be a buying entity as it is set to purchase and consolidate harvested oysters of its individual members and non-members.

Per press release of DA- PRDP, collected products will be sold as fresh oysters in a sack and fermented oysters in a jar.

With this, the provincial and other local officials vowed their support to the enterprise during the groundbreaking program of the facility.

Reaffirming the general objective of the DA-PRDP, Joel Ordoña of Aklan PPMIU cited that the PRDP does not only aim for food production but also targets all segments of the value chain with identified constraints to be addressed and be given appropriate interventions.

Meanwhile, ASFA President Clyde Duran stressed that the construction of the processing facility will greatly aid the members for additional livelihood and stable income.

It could be noted that the PRDP is one of the special projects under the DA which aims to increase rural incomes and enhance farm and fishery productivity in targeted areas.

Further, it gears towards a more inclusive rural development by supporting smallholder farmers and fisherfolk to increase their marketable surpluses and improving their access to markets. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6 with report from DA-PRDP6)
