Two BU Meteorology Students partake in the 7th Taiwan-Philippines International Science Conference

LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY (PIA5/Albay) –- Two Meteorology students represented Bicol University (BU) in the 7th Taiwan-Philippines Earth Sciences International Conference (TPESIC) with their undergraduate thesis. The confab was held at the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, from February 6 to 10.

TPESIC aims to initiate a close collaboration between earth scientists from Taiwan and the Philippines to discuss their findings in geology, geophysics, ocean science, atmospheric science, and other aspects of Earth Sciences.

Fourth-year meteorology students Earl Jeffrey B. Dineros and Henric R. Jandoc presented their study titled  "On the Intensification of Super Typhoon Goni (2020)."

Jan Mark B. Diesta, co-author of the said study, was unable to join the team in Taiwan.

“The studies that Earl Jeffrey and Henric presented were part of their undergraduate thesis, which was successfully defended in December 2022 under my supervision,” said their thesis adviser Dr. Jason P. Punay, faculty member of the BU Department of Physics.

The team participated in the two-day scientific activities of TPESIC which consisted of lectures, oral and poster sessions, and short courses, followed by a three-day field trip.

“There was no selection done by BU. The high quality of their work made me decide to encourage them to present it in an international conference, where international experts from the fields of atmospheric science and meteorology can openly criticize or comment in our research,” said Dr. Punay.

This year’s TPESIC was organized by National Cheng Kung University, in cooperation with National Central University, Academia Sinica, National Chung Cheng University, Central Weather Bureau, National Taiwan University, and National Science and Technology Council.

Preparation process

Dineros shared that it took him about four to five nights to prepare the poster for the study’s  first part about ‘Environmental conditions’.

He said that  choosing the appropriate template was the most challenging part.

“Witnessing a world full of professionals is such an  invaluable experience as it enabled me to widen my vision for my career,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jandoc’s preparation for the second part of the study ‘Deep Convective Clouds, Precipitation, Cloud Microphysics, and Wind structure’ entailed two weeks of finishing the  slides for his oral presentation, as well as studying various journal articles.

“My love for the atmospheric science / meteorology community became deeper. I can definitely see myself more clearly in this field someday,” Jandoc said.

Dineros was confident that their preparations successfully paid off.

“We were able to deliver our presentation smoothly. The audience seems to be satisfied with our presentation,” said Dineros.

“The conference surpassed my expectations. Although the number of presenters were considerably less compared to other conferences, the quality was top notch,” Jandoc said.

“To my knowledge, Henric and Earl Jeffrey were the only undergraduates in the said conference,” he stated.

Most of the Philippine delegates are affiliated with Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

Currently, the team is expecting to join the upcoming Philippine Meteorological Society (PMS) Annual Convention happening from March 20 to 21. (With reports from Ann Jubelle F. De Vera, BU Intern-PIA5/Albay)
