ZAMBOANGA CITY, Feb. 27 (PIA) – This year’s celebration of Women’s Month in Zamboanga City will highlight women’s achievements, raising consciousness against bias and violence, and become advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“Women are the most powerful beings in the world. Not only that they are the prime caretakers of families, they also have great influence as mothers, sisters and friends in the community,” said Wilfredo Aporongao, Zamboanga City GAD officer.
The City Government of Zamboanga through the Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System and partner agencies spearhead this year’s city-wide National Women’s Month Celebration 2023 with the launch of the new recurring theme, “We are All for Gender Equality, We are All for an Inclusive Society” anchored on the 6-year theme “We for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society” which commences this year 2023 until year 2028.
This year’s activities form part of our ongoing advocacy campaigns for gender equality, inclusivity and community empowerment in Zamboanga City. The annual activities of the city government includes the Marcha de las Mujeres and #PurpleFridays, this year’s celebration is different and jam-packed as more series of activities are lined up compared to the previous years due to the ease of health restrictions in the city.
Marcha de las Mujeres on March 8 is an annual kick-off activity organized by the City Government of Zamboanga in partnership with the Local Council of Women - Zamboanga City Chapter in celebration of International Women’s Day. The Marcha de las Mujeres is a celebration of women in society and their role as active contributors of development.
Moreover, everyone is encourage to wear purple every Fridays of the month of March as a show of support to the advocacy. Purple is historically associated with efforts to achieve gender equality and now usually linked to contemporary feminism. It inspires hope and vision and symbolizes the gains so far achieved and those that are yet to come.
Other lined-up activities can also be participated by the Zamboangeños during the month-long celebration. The City Government of Zamboanga headed by Mayor John Dalipe fully supports programs and projects for women empowerment and gender and development for the community of the city.
