PhilHealth bares enhanced health benefit packages

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) 6 introduced several enhancements on its benefit packages bound to be implemented this year, marking its 28th anniversary.

In line with the mandate stipulated under the Universal Health Care (UHC), PhilHealth continuously works on the expansion and implementation of responsive steps to cater to the medical needs of the Filipinos conducive to the changing times.

According to the PhilHealth 6 Acting Regional Vice President Janet A. Monteverde, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) have already remitted a total of P21 billion funds from their revenues to the corporation intended for the improvement and expansion of its packages, as stipulated under the 2023 General Appropriations Act.

With this, in a press statement issued by the President and Chief Executive Officer of PhilHealth Emmanuel R. Ledesma, Jr., the agency is set to expand the coverage for outpatient hemodialysis from 90 to 156 sessions.

The insurance corporation will likewise provide P270,000 financial support to patients who are on peritoneal dialysis and pay P600,000 to organ donors for renal patients qualified under its “Z Benefits for Kidney Transplantation.”

Enhancements in select Z benefit packages for patients who have health conditions requiring prolonged hospitalization and costly treatments that includes orthopedic implants, kidney transplantation, breast, cervical, and prostate cancers, and open-heart surgeries for children are also among the pipelined benefits set to be expanded this year.

PhilHealth also views to rationalize select inpatient case rates particularly moderate and high-risk pneumonia and acute stroke, both ischemic and hemorrhagic, as these are the most common cases availed in the recent years per insurance corporation’s account held.

During the press conference held on February 27, Monteverde also introduced some of its outpatient benefit packages that are set to be launched this 2023 such as the outpatient benefit package for mental health as furtherance to the agency’s existing inpatient coverages for mental health conditions, severe acute malnutrition (SAM) for children below five years old, and the rationalized COVID-19 benefit packages particularly for inpatients for RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Test and isolation packages.

PhilHealth said the new health packages will be funded by the regular member

contributions and subsidies from the national government for indirect contributors.

Additionally, it also works on strengthening its recently rolled out program, the Konsultasyong Sulit at Tama (KonSulta) program where members and dependents can avail of the primary health care services encompassing professional services, diagnostic services, and medicines for the common conditions like hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, among others.

PhilHealth 6 noted that there are already 125 accredited KonSulta providers in the region as of January 2023.

Marking its 28th anniversary, PhilHealth leans to its theme this year “Pinalawak at mga Bagong Benepisyo para sa Mamamayang Filipino.”

“We are succeeding in ways that 28 years ago, we never could have imagined. Our work doesn’t just enrich our own lives, but our community and our customers as well,” said Monteverde. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6)
