DENR releases rescued Tarsier in Zambo Sur

PAGADIAN CITY, Mar 15 (PIA) -- A Philippine Tarsier (Tarsius scrichta) was rescued recently, and turned over to the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Zamboanga del Sur.

Avelino Balano, a resident of Purok Makiangayon, Cogongan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur, who sighted the wildlife near his home, delivered the tarsier personally in a big box and turned the same over to Protected Area Superintendent (PASu) Mario B. Ronulo.

The wildlife was determined to be healthy and in good condition by the PENRO ZDS Retrieval and Rescue Team. It was then released back to the wild by Park Rangers the next day in Lake Maragang, Mt. Timolan Protected Landscape, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur. It immediately fled to its new habitat.

The killing and destroying, trading, collecting, hunting or possessing, maltreating and/or inflicting other injuries of wildlife is punishable under Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act with six years and one day to 12 years imprisonment and a fine ranging from P100,000 to P1 million.

Meanwhile, an Information Education and Communication (IEC) Campaign was conducted in the municipality of Guipos, in line with the celebration of the World Wildlife Day with the theme "Partnership for Wildlife Conservation" where the Wildlife Resources Conservation Protection Act  was discussed to stress the importance of the wildlife resources, their habitats and the need for proper funds allocation.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) encourages the public to immediately report any sighting of wildlife through the DENR hotline: 09481471250. (RVC/EDT/CCP/PIA9 with reports and photos from the DENR9)
