BTA Parliament brings free services to women, children and elderly

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Mar. 16 (PIA) – Thousand of Basileños  availed of free services provided by the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament in partnership with the Provincial Government of Basilan and other stakeholders on Saturday (Mar.11) in celebration of Women’s Month 2023.


As part of Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament Deputy Speaker MP Atty. Laisa Masuhud Alamia's continued her advocacy for the rights of women, children and the elderly and her office led the conduct of the People's Day in Basilan featuring a Health and Fun Fair for communities.


In her message during the program, Atty. Alamia emphasized that women empowerment is not only the responsibility of women but it’s everybody’s concern and responsibility.


“Women empowerment requires constant efforts from women and everyone. This annual commemoration of National Women’s Month, is a reminder of what we have achieved and what we need to be done…Habang patuloy ang political transition sa Bangsamoro, patuloy din po tayong nag aadvocate para sa Karapatan at kapakanan ng mga kababaihan lalo na sa Bangsamoro Parliament”, Atty. Alamia said.


Atty. Alamia also encouraged Basilan women leaders to participate and run for a position in the coming BARMM election.

“ Sa 2025 elections, ang mga babae ay pwede nang tumakbo sa Bangsamoro parliament sa region dahil kailangan aabot ng 30 percent na miyembro ng parliament, Members of Parliaments at dapat babae so this is good news sa ating mga women political leaders, empowered leaders na nandito sa basilan I am encouraging you to run for the parliament sa Bangsamoro”, Atty. Alamia said stressing the importance of women participation in the parliament.

Meanwhile, Governor Jim Salliman in his message,  called on for everyone to sustain the gains of peace in the province citing that in the previous years with the previous situation of Basilan, women are one of the most affected sector.

“ Sa ating lahat, huwag ninyong pababayaan kung ano yong gain, hindi lamang ng kababaihan kundi ng probinsya natin kung saan na tayo at pipilitin nating lahat na di magkakaroon ng disadvantages na kalalagyan yong ating mga kababaihan sa ating probinsya,” Governor Salliman stressed.

The event also highlights lecture on women's rights and Shariah discussed by Atty. Laisa Alamia to around 200 women participants.

The activity catered thousands of Basileños who availed different services; eye check - up and free eye glasses (300 clients), circumcision (70 children), medical consultation (200 clients),  minor surgery ( 5 patients ), cataract operation ( 15 patients) Hygiene Kits (350  women beneficiaries), legal services  (50 women), Booth Manicure/Pedicure (25 women), haircut (50 clients),  Free Hijab/Make up/Pins (100 beneficiaries), slippers (100 children), toys (100 children), arts and craft supplies (50 children), - goodies (100 children) and 300 children received free ice cream.

The beneficiaries are grateful to the government for reaching out different communities especially in Basilan to provide services especially to women.

“Maraming salamat lalo na sa BARMM at lahat na nandito dahil may mga ganitong pagkakataon na mabigyan kami ng libreng serbisyo, malaking tulong po ito sa amin”, one of the beneficiaries said.

Agencies and organizations that delivered services during the fair include the Provincial Social Welfare Office - Basilan Province, Commission on Human Rights IX, Public Attorney’s Office, Association of Muslim Doctors - Zamboanga City, Zamboanga City Medical Center, Philippine Society of Anesthesiology, Crystal Clear Vision, JJC Ateneo de Zamboanga University, and Kalisa Action Network, Inc. (NBE/NDR/PIA Basilan)
