PHO-Aklan reminds public on 4S strategies vs. dengue

KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) -- The Provincial Health Office here has reiterated its reminder to the public on the 4S prevention strategies against dengue as the cases continue to rise in Aklan.

Based on the report of the Aklan Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance and Response Unit, from January 1 to March 4, 2023, the province logged 136 dengue cases.

The figure is 2.166 percent higher than the six cases reported during the same period in 2022.

The province also recorded with two dengue-related deaths this year from January 1 to March 4. One fatality was a 15-year old female and the other was 81-year old.

All the 17 municipalities of the province have already recorded dengue cases. The town of Ibajay has the most number of cases with 38. It was followed by Nabas and Kalibo with 18 cases each and New Washington with 15 cases.

With less than 10 cases were Batan and Balete with eight cases each; Banga with six cases; Libacao and Altavas with five  each; with 3three cases each were the towns of Numancia, Malay and Makato; Malinao- two cases ; and with one case each in Tangalan, Madalag, Lezo, and Buruanga.

According to PHO-Aklan, the strict implementation of the 4-S strategy calls for everyone to become prime movers in controlling mosquito population and preventing another dengue deaths in the province. 

First of the 4S strategies which the health office keeps on campaigning is Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites. In here, it is important to remove any space or container than can hold unnecessary stagnant water which may become breeding sites of mosquitoes.

Next is Self-protective measures wherein everyone is encouraged to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts and daily use of mosquito repellent and use of mosquito nets when sleeping.

When experiencing symptoms like fever for more than 2-3 days, it is important to Seek early consultations. It is significant to seek early consultation between 1-3 days of fever to immediately recognize the disease. 

Other dengue warning signs are severe headache, abdominal pain, bleeding, rash, frequent vomiting, lethargy or restlessness, pain behind the eyes, muscles, and joints,  which patients are advised to seek early consultation if experiencing any such.

PHO-Aklan is also campaigning to support fogging activities in areas with dengue cases. (AAL/SQP/PIA Aklan)
