MPSPC-SSC initiates basic life support training

BONTOC, Mountain Province (PIA) --The importance of disaster preparedness and risk reduction management among the youth continues to gain headway here as 106 student leaders from the different student organizations of the Mountain Province State Polytechnic College (MPSPC) participated in a two-day Basic Life Support - Basic Rope Manship Training.

Trained by the Bureau of Fire Protection – Bontoc, the students learned the different types of knots, loops, bends, hitches, proper knot tying, and application of Standard and Australian rappel during the activity on March 18 and 19 at the Provincial Evacuation Center in Bontoc.

The Bontoc Fire Station lauded the MPSPC-Student Supreme Council officers for initiating such   training and their dedication in learning life skills that can help them not only during rescue operation but in their day-to-day activities.

“The participants showed dedication and initiative in the said activity because first and foremost, they were the ones who made a request to conduct the activity, then upon finding out that the Station cannot provide equipment for all the participants, they collaborated with the PDRRMO (Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and management Office) so that all students can learn. Dedication was also shown because all participants showed their willingness to learn from Day 1 until the last day with complete attendance,” according to a collective statement given by Bontoc Fire Station personnel.

Lyned S. Apaling, a 3rd year BS Criminology student, said that the different student organizations initiated this training because of its importance to the students, who usually are the first responders in times of emergency.

“It is very important for the students to acquire such trainings like this wherein in times of accidents, we are the first responders that can apply first aid while waiting for the emergency team to arrive,” she said.

When asked if they will conduct similar activities, she said ‘definitely’. (JDP/VJLT-PIA Mt. Province)
