PH Army, US Air Force break ground for ‘Balikatan’ project

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- A multi-purpose hall will soon rise in the vicinity of Inabasan Elementary School in Brgy. Inabasan, Sibalom town.

This after the Philippine Army (PA) and the United States Air Force (USAF) held a groundbreaking ceremony for a more than P1.6-million joint project in the area, March 27, as part of the 2023 Balikatan Exercises.

The Balikatan Project, which forms part of the Engineering Capability Program of the Balikatan Exercises 38-2023, is one of the bilateral training exercises between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the U.S. Pacific Command.

Engineers from the PA’s 552nd Engineer Construction Battalion and USAF’s 18th Civil Engineer Group team up to construct a multi-purpose hall within the vicinity of Inabasan Elementary School in Brgy. Inabasan.

In a statement, 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) commander Brig. Gen. Marion Sison expressed his gratitude to the people and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Sibalom for the support to the project, which intends to contribute to the social development of partner communities.

"We are optimistic that the partnership of our soldiers with US counterparts through the 38th iteration of annual bilateral Balikatan exercises will yield results favorable to the relationship of two forces and the people of Antique. The exercises shall likewise serve as a venue for the Filipino and US Soldiers and the Antiqueños to work shoulder-to-shoulder in building communities," Sison said.

For his part, 301st Infantry Brigade commander Col. Michael Samson thanked the Balikatan team for identifying Brgy. Inabasan as one of the project beneficiaries.

"I encourage the community to help, support and cooperate with the Balikatan forces in constructing the said project. We are looking forward that this project shall promote a peaceful place conducive to education and learning," Col. Samson said.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Sibalom town Mayor Gian Carlo Occeña, Antique Peace and Order and Public Safety (POPS) coordinator Margie Gadian, local police, PA and USAF

personnel, school teachers, and village residents.

The Balikatan Exercises are scheduled this April, with events in different locations in Northern Luzon, Palawan, and Antique. (AAL/BPS/PIA Antique/story and photos from Philippine Army Spearhead Troopers and 301st Infantry Brigade, PA)
