Roxas City finds volunteerism a pillar in dev't

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- Volunteerism plays a vital role in Roxas City's development direction as the local government intends to make it a state of mind of every citizen to be included and be part of community building.

This was disclosed by Roxas City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Ronald Amigo during a Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) and Philippine Information Agency - initiated interaction with local mediamen, March 24, at the Gerry Roxas Foundation in Brgy. Dayao, here.

He said that volunteerism is one of the pillars of Roxas City mayor Ronnie Dadivas's administration that values inclusivity amid the rapidly growing city.

"Roxas City has a pending request before the PNVSCA to help us for volunteers in our solid waste as well as waste water management," noted Amigo, who also started his career locally as a volunteer of the PAGASA Youth Movement during his college days.

He has also been a United Nations (UN) volunteer and has a pending application for volunteer services abroad.

Recently, the city government sent a letter

of intent to the US Embassy to request for volunteers from the US Peace Corps in providing and crafting measures for the LGU's climate change policies and programs to prepare and mitigate the impact of climate change or any disasters.

Amigo added that mayor Dadivas has also created a City Ordinances and Regulations Enforcement (CORE) Unit that is composed of, among others, members from the private sector who will be deputized to implement city ordinances and regulations within the jurisdiction of the city.

Amid the pandemic, the city government mobilized a number of volunteers to help in its response against the COVID-19 disease.

"We know the importance and impact of having more people involved and participating in our development endeavors," he stressed.

The media engagement was intended to showcase stories of volunteerism and the current efforts of the region on promoting volunteerism as a development strategy.

It also capped the five-day training on Mainstreaming Volunteerism in Local Governance - Western Visayas Region in view of the PNVSCA's efforts to assist LGUs in integrating volunteerism into their local development plans and in preparing local legislation on volunteerism. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
