PVAO: Reflect on the courage of veterans

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) --The 81st Araw ng Katingan on April 9 is a powerful reminder of the courage and gallantry of the men and women who fought for the nation’s freedom.

This was underscored by Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) in Negros Occidental OIC Shella Tondo as she urged Filipinos to reflect and preserve the memories of the war veterans’ sacrifices.

With the theme “Kagitingan ng mga Beterano, Pundasyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino,” the country simultaneously observes the Veterans’ Week which calls for unity and solidarity, she said.

According to Tondo, the youths of today can get inspiration and learn from the heroism and patriotism that veteran soldiers have displayed.

Such bravery was manifested on many occasions especially during the World War II Liberation of Negros marked annually every September 9.

Tondo said their office attends to five World War II veterans aged 91 years old to 102 years old and about 700 other

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) retirees aside from the 2,000 surviving families of veterans who are receiving benefits from PVAO.

It has also 60 scholars who are descendants of WW II veterans receiving an annual educational benefit of P40,000. (AAL/Lljr/PIA6 Negros Occidental)
