Local food drive, high value crops week up in WV

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) 6 holds a back-to-back trade fair and free seminars in support of the local food promotion and high value crops production drive in the region.

DA 6 OIC-Regional Executive Director Engr. Jose Albert A. Barrogo extended his message to the local producers and consumers to engage in planting high value crops and patronizing Filipino cuisine with the celebration of Filipino Food Month and High Value Crops Week this April.

In its fifth year, the Filipino Food Month is currently anchored to the theme “Pagkaing Sariling Atin, Mahalin at Pagyamanin,” which highlights the importance of indigenous ingredients and culinary dishes.

Barrogo noted that patronizing local food is a means to show the general public’s support to the local farmers, just as it also "symbolizes our identity as Ilonggos."

Apart from the intensified promotion among communities, he also emphasized the importance of making innovations for packaging, shelf life, and value-addition enhancements of Filipino food.

With this, a total of 16 farmer entrepreneurs showcased their respective products in the Agri-Aqua Trade Fair and Exhibits at Robinsons Place Main in Iloilo City since April 11, and will end on April 13.

Meanwhile, in line with the 27th anniversary of the implementation of Republic Act No. 7900, also known as the High Value Crops Development Act of 1995, the Department has intensified its interventions among the farmer-beneficiaries through the provision of several agricultural projects and farm supplies.

A series of free seminars to be rendered by the technical personnel and specialists in agriculture were also devised in line with the High Value Crops Week celebration where urban and communal gardening, cacao, coffee, and vegetable production topics are bound to be highlighted. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6)
