Fisherfolks in Abra town surrender 52 electro-fishing devices

BANGUED, Abra (PIA) – Fifty- two electro-fishing devices were tuned over to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) as a result of the intensified campaign against illegal fishing activities in the municipality of Lagayan.

The local government unit of Lagayan represented by Municipal Agriculturist Rowena Martinez and  Municipal Police Station represented by PCpl. Benson Reforma  led the  turn over  of  the  illegal fishing  devices  to  Provincial Fishery Officer Janet Daguto  at the BFAR-Provincial Fishery Office in Calaba, Bangued..

Fisherfolks in the municipality of Lagayan recently surrendered the electro-fishing devices to authrities.  “Boluntaryo naman na  isinuko ng mga kababayan namin  doon sa Collagao at Pang-ot itong mga illegal fishing gadgets nila habang nagpapatrol ang ating mga kapulisan,” Martinez said.

She explained that instead of the erring fisherfolks being fined, they are required to attend a series of necessary trainings and eventually get a livelihood grant that will give them the proper fishing tools. This campaign is in support to the program of BFAR called “Oplan-Kaliwaan”.

BFAR-Abra Fisheries Regulations Officer Junior Cesar Martinez said the confiscated electro-fishing apparatuses will be kept under the custody of their office.

“We encourage   fisherfolks to surrender illegal fishing gadgets and in return, we will provide the proper fishing gears for them,” he said as he stressed on the dangers   of continuous use of electro-fishing gears to both humans and young fishes.

The Municipal Agriculturist   bared that their active campaign against illegal fishing is backed by a municipal ordinance implemented under Mayor Edmarc Crisologo.

To continuously monitor illegal fishing activities in the town, Martinez said that the LGU recently hired ‘Bantay-Ilog’ personnel who will conduct patrol and monitoring along the fishing areas.

“Today, we have five Bantay-Ilog under the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist and to see whether our fisherfolks are violating these laws,” Martinez stated. (JDP/CAGT – PIA CAR, Abra)
