PBBM vows continuous support for oil spill-affected fisherfolk in OrMin

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro (PIA) -- President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. promised the continuous assistance for the people of Oriental Mindoro, particularly the oil spill-affected fisherfolk.

In his address during his visit in the province, April 15, President Marcos Jr. said that the government, with Japan and America, are working on ways to lessen the effects of the oil spill.

President Bongbong Marcos leads the awarding of various interventions from different government agencies such as DA, BFAR, DTI, DSWD, and DOLE for the oil spill-affected fisherfolks held in the municipality of Pola, Oriental Mindoro.

"Marami tayong kaibigan [na] tinulungan tayo - galing sa Japan, galing sa America- tinutulungan tayo para kung papaano ang pinakamagandang gagawin para mabawasan ang epekto ng oil spill," he said.

Despite the government's efforts to minimize the incident's effect on the province, the President explained that its damages will still be felt by the fisherfolk and small businesses.

On this note, he said that the government is eyeing alternative livelihood for the affected individuals and associations to mitigate economic losses and provide additional source of income.

"Nagpa-plano kami ng mga livelihood na pwedeng dalhin. Pero ang sabi ko nga sa kanila…kahit mawala na 'yung oil spill, sana patuloy naman 'yung livelihood program. Baka 'yung mga residente ay meron namang option, meron namang pagkakataon na makasubok naman ng ibang hanapbuhay para makadagdag sa kinikita," the President highlighted.

On the other hand, President Marcos commended the efforts of the government agencies with their quick response to the oil spill.

"Maganda naman po ang naging resulta, so far, dahil lahat po ng ahensya ng gobyerno, mula nang tumama ang oil spill at mula nang lumubog ang barko, naka-alert na lahat," he said.

Marcos spearheaded the awarding of various interventions from the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Agricultural Credit and Policy Council, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Trade and Industry, and Department of Labor and Employment amounting to not less than P558,535,993.50.
