DOLE 6 fishing boats to augment livelihood of benes in Iloilo town

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 6 led the expansion of the existing livelihood of the tourism industry's informal workers with the recent turnover of 25 fishing boats to a cooperative in Carles, Iloilo.

Fifty-two members of Carles Sea-Land Transport Cooperative (CASELATCO), a cooperative that had been an active partner of the local government unit in the promotion and implementation of tourism projects, coastal marine protection program, and suppression of illegal use of fishing methods in the area, were identified as beneficiaries of the project amounting to P1,241,568.00.

DOLE 6 regional director lawyer Sixto T. Rodriguez, Jr. stressed the importance of an alternative livelihood to informal workers in the tourism industry particularly during off-season of the tourists.

He added that engaging them into fishing also encourages them to be more vigilant and responsible stewards of the environment, promoting sustainable livelihood.

CASELATCO and Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Tourism chairperson lawyer Raul Betita also noted that through the fishing boats, beneficiaries can now have an alternative source of income during the lean months of tourism.

This likewise contributes in shaping back the coastal town’s tourism industry that has been among the largely affected sectors characterized by limited employment and livelihood opportunities in the Northern Iloilo during the height of COVID 19 pandemic.

With this, CASELATCO manager Cyril Cobarobias pledged that they will take good care of the project and utilize it effectively, citing that it will be the source of their income especially during the implementation of closed season of fishing in Carles. (JBG/AGP/PIA 6 with reports from Department of Labor and Employment 6)
