CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office here calls on the public to observe safety measures while enjoying their vacation this summer.
During the Usapang Rehiyon, a Kapihan by the Regional Office of the Philippine Information Agency-Mimaropa, April 27, Oriental Mindoro PDRRMO Training Officer Ivy Kristine A. Basco explained the importance of maintaining health and safety precautions during vacation.
Basco enumerated the tips that people need to do at home before leaving for vacation.
"Lock all the windows and doors of your home. As much as possible, use burglar alarms or install CCTV cameras,"she said, encouraging the public to invest on high-security lock mechanisms for their houses.
She added “The main problem with vacation photos, at least if you share them while on vacation, is that they tell the entire world that you’re not at home.”
According to her, posting on social media with vacation photos alerts criminals, vandals, and other people that "your home is unprotected and wide open to whatever they want to do."
"The use of social media such as photo sharing is a distraction from your vacation. Even if your profile is completely private, the reality of social media is that people interact with the things you post," she said.

Basco also discussed first aid for common travel-related health emergencies and environmental emergencies especially that it is now in the mid-summer season, where heat exhaustion and heat stroke are prevalent.
“People don’t need to be afraid during the holidays because Tourism Officers, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officers (DRRMOs) are always ready for the welfare of the travelers,” said Basco.
The month of April of every year is observed as Vacation Hazards Prevention Month per Presidential Proclamation 115-A, signed by former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA)
