Basilan welcomes Lamitan - Cotabato sea link

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Apr. 25 (PIA) –  The Province of Basilan is elated as it welcomes on April 25 the new sea link between the port of Lamitan City and Cotabato City through MV Paradise Island.

Governor Jim Salliman together with the Minister of Transportation and Communication Atty. Paisalin Tago, Lamitan City Administrator Maria Florencia Candelaria Bisal and some town mayors of Basilan gathered in Lamitan City and welcome the launch of the MV Paradise Island’s maiden voyage to Cotabato City.

In his message, Salliman congratulated the Basileños for the realization of  this significant sea route that benefits the entire island province of Basilan. He said the new sea route does not only need the support of everyone but it must be taken as a responsibility.

Gov. Salliman also expressed his gratitude to the leadership of Chief Minister Ahod Ibrahim for giving importance to all Basileños, taking into consideration its significant effects to the movements of people and products.

“Kung member tayo ng BARMM hindi lamang sa pangalan, hindi lang sa kultura, kung hindi pati na rin sa economic and political connectivity [If we are member of BARMM, not only by the name, not only with the culture but even in the economic and political activity]”, Governor Salliman said.

The geographical location of Basilan is too far from the seat of BARMM government in Cotabato City, for which Gov. Salliman stressed the need for connectivity in all aspects to BARMM from economic, political and cultural. Hence, he said that the new sea route is a very significant step towards that goal.

Salliman added that he is also asking the MOTC to further advocate and strengthen the inter-connectivity of the island provinces of Tawi-Tawi, Sulu and Basilan and to the mainland.

Furthermore, the governor is also hoping for Lamitan City port to become an international port as envisioned by the BARMM and that a feasibility study as to its functionality should be conducted.

(I know that this will be a protracted struggle for us to visualize our plans to provide concrete expression for the benefit of the people of the Bangsamoro. This is one of our struggles, which are based on the sincerity, based on everyone's support, the local government, stakeholders and private sectors. As the governor, rest assured that we will provide not just support but we will own it and protect this since we already have different level of economic activities.)

Salliman added that the new roro route is a manifestation of the successful peace process under the leadership of BARMM.

For his part, Lamitan City Mayor Oric Furigay in his message delivered by City Administrator Maria Florencia Candelaria Bisal, he described MV Paradise Island’s maiden trip as something that gives flesh to Lamitan City being the Economic Corridor of Basilan province.

“The inaugural voyage marks the milestone in the economic endeavor of Lamitan City and Basilan Province in general, as we unload and later today load goods and products for our markets and our people,” he said as he stressed that it has been a long dream for every trader of Basilan that major products and cargoes will no longer pass a circuitous route via Zamboanga Peninsula.

Mayor Furigay added that with the new and additional trip of vessels in Lamitan City, the City Government aims further to support the improvement of sailing schedule reliability and transactions amongst Bangsamoro departments and agencies to lessen the hassle in traveling the usual Lamitan-Zamboanga-Cotabato City trips.

The MV Island Paradise has the capacity of 124 passenger with 14-15 hours of average travel from the place of origin. (RVC/NDR/PIA Basilan with report from Richard G. Falcatan-PIO)
