Zambo City gradually prepares for PUV modernization

ZAMBOANGA CITY, May 2 (PIA) – Public Utility Vehicles in Zamboanga City gradually transitions to modern transportation in support to Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) ways to address transport-related problems as well as the demands of ever-changing advancements and technology.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB-9) assists the operators and drivers of PUVs in the region through providing them programs specifically lending programs to financially support them in the transition.

Atty. Jason Tan of LTFRB-9 clarified that the operators in the region supports the modernization program of the government and they rejected the call to participate in the nationwide jeepney strike happened on March 6 to 7, 2023. However, there are still apprehensions from the operators and drivers due to the lack of financial capacity to transition to modern PUV.

Further, aside from the lending programs that operators and drivers can avail, LTFRB-9 also provides social support program for operators through free vocational learning activity for the drivers to venture into another economic activities.

Atty. Tan added that Zamboanga City is ready for the transition to PUV modernization program and if the city can already approve the Local Public Transport Route Plan, it will gradually phaseout the traditional PUVs. Some operators in the city are expecting more modern jeepney units coming in the following months.

“We are implementing this for the safety, convinience, comfort and reliability of the passengers,” Atty Tan said.

This program has been issued in 2017 under Department Order (D.O.) No. 2017-011 or the Omnibus Guidelines on the Planning and Identification of Public Road Transportation Services and Franchise Issuance or the Omnibus Franchising Guidelines (OFG). (RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
