Supplemental immunization vs MR, polio underway

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- Health authorities here have begun the implementation of the "Chikiting Ligtas" Measles-Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR OPV SIA) throughout the province.

Scheduled for the entire month of May, the supplemental immunization intends to achieve 95% coverage for children aged 0-59 months to prevent the transmission of poliovirus types and measles-rubella viruses.

In a radio program on May 3, Health Education and Promotion Officer Irene Rondez-Duldoco stressed that children need to participate in the catch-up vaccination and receive additional doses for continued protection and to prevent the outbreak of diseases in the community.

Duldoco said that vaccines are available in fixed sites such as Rural Health Units (RHUs), hospitals, and birthing centers, as well as in temporary or modified fixed sites identified by Local Government Units (LGUs).

The Department of Health (DOH) and the Provincial Health Office (PHO) will also carry out mobile vaccination efforts to expand the reach of the activity and protect more children against the threats of these vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD).

Also, to make sure that children receive the appropriate extra doses of their vaccines, Duldoco added that parents or guardians must bring the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) card in the supplemental immunization activity.

In Antique, 58,469 kids 9-59 months of age are eligible for the measles-rubella vaccine, while 68,339 aged 0-59 months for the oral polio vaccine, with health authorities saying that 95% of this population is enough to obtain herd immunity and create a wall of protection for the unvaccinated.

Further, DOH and PHO recently invited health stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to a collaboration in a bid to secure their support and participation in the ongoing MR OPV SIA.

Dr. Rommel Garganera, the provincial officer of the Department of Health (DOH) Antique, during the meeting, underscored the importance of working together toward the goal of protecting Antiqueño children from various health issues.

The official also expressed confidence in the success of the MR OPV SIA through the consolidated efforts of stakeholders such as the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the Department of Education (DepEd), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), LGUs, private organizations, and media practitioners.

In 2022, PHO data shows that Antique has one confirmed case each for measles and rubella, while 27 more are suspected cases. (AGP/BPS/PIA Antique)
