NGCP geared towards one grid, sharing of energy sources across PH

CEBU CITY, Cebu, April 28 (PIA) -- To further improve the power transmission services, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has continued their efforts to provide safe and reliable electricity to end-users thru the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP).

NGCP is mandated to improve the reliability, adequacy, security, and stability of the grid in the three major regions of the Philippines, namely: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Luzon and Visayas have had an interconnected grid since 1998 comprising seven interconnections.

The MVIP is one of the ongoing projects of NGCP that will link the three major islands to create one grid and ensure the sharing of energy sources across the country.

Submarine cables and overhead wires were used to connect Dapitan, Zamboanga to Santander using High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable.

HVDC cables will be able to transmit energy with minimal energy loss from Mindanao to Cebu and would ensure sufficient power supply is transmitted to areas where it is much needed.

Work on the submarine cable components started in November 2018 and was expected to be completed by June 2021.

But due to restrictions on entry of foreign experts, work suspension, and manpower reduction brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic had brought significant delays in the project’s execution.

The MVIP project is set to be completed by June 2023. (MYP|PIA7)
