Aklan launches ‘Chikiting Ligtas’ drive

KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) -- The province of Aklan launched on May 3, the “Chikiting Ligtas” Measles-Rubella and bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-bOPV SIA), at the Numancia Covered Court in Numancia town.

Governor Jose Enrique Miraflores, with Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) 6 regional director Dr. Adriano P. Suba-an,  led this Provincial Government through the Provincial Health Office (PHO) initiated activity which was also was attended by Vice Governor Reynaldo Quimpo, Dr. Anthony Onimisi, Consultant of World Health Organization (WHO), and PHO-Aklan personnel led by Dr. Leslie Ann Sedillo, Provincial Health Officer II.

In his message at the opening program, Miraflores committed full support of the provincial government to SIA which intends to protect the Aklanon children against measles and polio.

“Makasalbar it kabuhi ro pagbakuna sa atong mga inunga (Vaccination will save the lives of our children),” the governor said, stressing that the provincial government will do its best to deliver the immunization services to the grassroots with the deployment of health workers to areas with big population.

Meanwhile, Suba-an commended the provincial government of Aklan for the sustained collaboration with the DOH in pushing forward the health agenda in the province.

He revealed in his talk that Western Visayas targets to reach 95% vaccination accomplishment this year to prevent the possible outbreak of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and oral polio, citing that the region has only attained 51.54% immunization coverage rate last year.

“Let us make sure to prevent any outbreak in Aklan as these vaccines are safe, effective, and free,” Suba-an added, assuring the parents, health workers, children, local officials, and the media present during the launching activity.

Onimisi also delivered a message on the importance of vaccination and explained the part that the WHO and DOH play in this present campaign, leading the crowd to chant -“ Walang Tigdas Aklan.”
