BFAR 6 launches ‘Adopt-a-Village’ pilot site for BSC Plan

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 led the launching of the Blue Swimming Crab (BSC) “Adopt-a-Village” Project as part of its primary efforts to improve the brand of Philippine BSC in the market and particularly boost the livelihood source of the people.

The pilot site identified for the implementation of the project is Brgy. Igbon in Concepcion town in Iloilo.

During the launching held on May 9, BFAR 6 regional director Remia A. Aparri emphasized that the project serves as one of the major components of the new BSC National Management Plan (BSC-NMP) that intends to improve the export rating of the “kasag” or crab produce from its current “Avoid/Red” status to at least “Good Alternative/Yellow” based on the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) Seafood Watch Program standards.

To note, the BSC-NMP plan was approved by the Department of Agriculture (DA) in October 2021, formalizing the project’s common implementation framework and setting up of localized reference points.

It further aims to provide guidance in crafting local policies in protecting the local resource, institutionalizing governance, and offering socio-economic benefits to the fishers and other supply chain actors.

With this, Aparri stressed that the pilot site for the Adopt-a-Village will serve as a model that will be replicated across the country once the crab industry is already stabilized in the selected area.

In her speech, she also encouraged the key industry players to take part in scheduling the activities in consonance with the project roll-out as to realize its primary goals and achieve its sustainability.

For the part of the local government unit, mayor Milliard S. Villanueva implied his full support to the project, recognizing the benefits it could bring to the livelihood of the people in the locality which is mainly devoted to kasag/crab production.

Likewise, Villanueva expressed his thanks to the BFAR 6 along with its local and international collaborators for selecting the town of Concepcion to become the pilot site for BSC.

Some of the Bureau’s partners in this endeavor include MBA, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Fish Right Program, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), Thai Union, Philippine Association of Crab Processors, Inc. (PACPI), and local academic institutions, among others. (AAL/AGP/PIA6)
