Pres. Marcos back in PH, reports outcomes of participation in the 42nd ASEAN Summit

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) –President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos is back in the country after his participation in the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Indonesia.

“I am happy to report on the outcomes of the Philippines’ participation in the 42nd ASEAN Summit held in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia on May 10-11, 2023,” Pres. Marcos said during his arrival at the Villamor Airbase on Thursday, May 11.

Pres. Marcos said that during his meetings with ASEAN Leaders, he emphasized the importance of upholding the international rules-based system which has underpinned regional security, peace and order in the region.

“I expressed commitment to the principles of free trade and multilateral trading system, called for enhanced supports for “nano” businesses, MSMEs, and their integration into the global economy,” Pres Marcos said.

“We continued to work towards long-term food and energy security; and to address the impacts of climate change, amongst other things,” Pres. Marcos added.

On the South China Sea issue, the President said that he reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and advocated for a rules-based maritime order anchored on the 1982 UNCLOS.

The President said he also encouraged ASEAN External Partners to increase their level of engagement in the BIMP-EAGA which is a joint aggrupation of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines and to support its role as a major catalyst in galvanizing economic development and enhancing connectivity in this vibrant sub-region.

President also thank Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who hosted the 42nd ASEAN Summit, for extending hospitality to the Philippine delegation. (pia-ncr)
