Concepcion town fisherfolk avail free items, services

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- Some free items and services like food packs, medicines, medical as well as dental check-ups and haircuts were availed by the fisherfolk in Concepcion town during the Fisherfolk’s Day held recently.

Themed as “Masaganang Agrikultura, Maunlad na Ekonomiya,” the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 initiated the activity as part of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk's Month this May in accordance to the Presidential Proclamation No. 33 issued on May 21,1989.

A total of 15 fisherfolk associations in the locality joined the celebration that intends to recognize the role and contribution of farmers and fishers in food sufficiency and fisheries sustainability in the country.

For its part, the BFAR 6 aims to honor the dubbed “heroes” of the fishery sector who were known to sustain fishery productivity particularly during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bureau has distributed fishing equipment and food packs among the participants and lighten up the celebration with several games and raffle prizes.

Likewise, the Department of Health- Western Visayas Center for Health Development and Iloilo Provincial Health Office led the free consultations and vaccination, provision of medicines, vitamins and attended to other medical needs of the beneficiaries including the conduct of lectures on Family Planning and Basic First Aid.

The Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Army also extended their help in providing logistical support and haircuts.

Meanwhile, Regional Fisherfolk Director of Western Visayas for this month, Roneo Comenta, called upon his fellow fisherfolk to strengthen their respective associations as the government projects currently are being afforded through groups and cooperatives.

Comenta further underscored to his colleagues the need to curb Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing and augment the government in law enforcement as to protect the municipal waters from abuse and destruction through their participation in “Bantay Dagat” Task Force.

Two women in the fishery sector were also recognized during the program for the significant contribution they have rendered in ensuring fishery sustainability in the district namely, Reynilda P. Partida, president of Samahan ng mga Responsableng Mangingisda from Brgy. Tarong, Carles, Iloilo and Helen R. Balajadia, an active member of law enforcement and Bantay Dagat in Concepcion town.
