Coco oil processing center soon in Altavas

KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) -- A Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)-based Cooking Oil Processing Center will soon rise in Altavas, Aklan with the recent groundbreaking ceremony of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan Shared Processing Facility (CFIDP-SPF) held in Barangay Man-up of the said town.

The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech) spearheaded the project as part of its mandate to on Integrated Coconut Processing of Downstream Products or Shared Facilities.

Engr. Andres M. Tuates, Jr. of PHilMech’s BioProcess Engineering Division revealed that the processing center has a project cost of P17 million and is expected to process up to 5,000 nuts per day when it becomes operational.

Tuates cited that this will be managed by the Man-up Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC) wherein coconuts purchased in the area for processing will be bought one peso higher than the prevailing price.

“Putting up a coconut shared processing facility in Aklan would greatly help maximize the potential of the coconut industry in the area, thus addressing the high volume of supply in the province,” said Tuates.

He further noted that the proposed enterprise can add value to the coconut industry by innovating another product from VCO which will offer a healthier option of cooking oil compared to those that are available in the market.

He added that this could enhance market competitiveness and quality of the commodity as well as product differentiation by having state-of-the-art facilities just as the shared processing center.

members of the cooperative but also other coconut farmers in the locality.

Aside from the facility, PHilMech will provide the processing equipment like manual dehusker, coconut water extractor, holding tank for cocowater, deshelling machine, paring machine, coconut meat washing bin, extractor for coconut milk, tubular centrifuge, and deodorizer machine, among others.

Meanwhile, in his message, Altavas mayor Denny D. Refol thanked the PHilMech and other government agencies present during the groundbreaking such as the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Land Bank of the Philippines, for pooling their expertise and resources together in the establishment of the said facility.

He also called on Altavasnons to plant more coconut trees so that the processing center will have sufficient raw materials for its sustained operation.

The groundbreaking ceremony was also graced by Emmanuel Soviet Russia Dela Cruz who represented Governor Jose Enrique Miraflores, Aklan Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Apolinar Cleope who represented Rep. Carlito Marquez of the first district of Aklan, Roy Peralta of PCA Central Office, and PCA VI regional manager Neil Melencion.

The program was capped with an awarding of certificate to CFIDP-SPF recipient Nita Payba, Chairperson of Man-up MPC, and Pledge of Commitment signing of all implementing agencies. (AGP/VGV/PIA Aklan)
