DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, May 25 (PIA) -- Dumaguete City has set measures to prepare for the incoming super typhoon Mawar (local name "Betty") which is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this weekend.

On May 24, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) have been activated to coordinate with government line agencies for response efforts.

In a coordination meeting, the council concurred to conduct pre-disaster risk assessments for floods, flash floods debris flow, and strong winds as part of the preparation.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo has ordered local departments to pre-position food packs, emergency vehicles, and equipment.

As chair of the council, the mayor also instructed all relevant agencies and organizations to mobilize their personnel and resources for pre-disaster efforts to mitigate the impact of typhoon Mawar.

The measures set by the council include prepositioning food items for affected families and individuals, intensify declogging of drainage canals and clearing of waterways, coordinate with power company for the clearing and vegetation of power lines, ensure the readiness generator sets and rubber boats with rescue personnel.

The CDRRMO team is also monitoring the rivers and will alert the communities for risks of flood.

The Department of Education officials here has been alerted to maintain direct communication with the City Mayor’s Office for possible announcement and enforcement of suspension of classes.

The barangay officials have been mobilized as part as disaster response teams.

PAGASA has forecasted that on May 25-27, Negros Oriental will experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon due to Southwesterly windflow.

On May 28-30, the province will have mostly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers with a possibility of occasional Heavy Rain Showers and thunderstorms due to enhancement of South Westerly wind flow (pre-habagat) by the typhoon. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental with reports from CPIO)
