Davao del Sur celebrates freedom from insurgency

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur (PIA) -- Officials from different local government units of Davao del Sur led by Governor Yvonne Cagas, national government agencies, non-government organizations and private groups, and other stakeholders to include the former rebels, come together, May 25, to celebrate the freedom of the entire Davao del Sur from insurgency.

This year's first insurgency-free celebration has a theme "Peace Ta, sa Davsuranong Kalinaw alang sa Maanyag nga Paraiso," where series of activities have been lined up for the four-day event, which will culminate on Sunday, May 28.

Governor Yvonne Rona-Cagas said that the success of attaining this freedom is had also sacrifices as she pointed out that the present generation must learn from the lessons of the past.

"It is now our duty to take advantage of what peace can give to Davsuranon. Our community, our government, our values must be strengthened further. Let us not relax to the peace that could refuel another ideology that may distract our part toward lasting peace," Cagas said.

As the first lady governor of the province, Cagas pledged her motherly love and least of her provincemate, to share her compassion, as she urged everyone to join her in their continued effort towards progressive Davao del Sur.

"Together, we can achieve more milestone for our people. Indeed the state of our province is sound, optimistic and beautiful," she stressed.

Meanwhile, Alias Bogart, former secretary-general of the Mt. Alip Revolutionary Committee-Far South Mindanao, thanked the government for reaching out to the former rebels by giving them second chance to life to live once again with their respective families and for the skills to start life anew.

He said he feels the government's action and concern for the communities by delivering  the various services to the comunities.

“Dakong tabang alang kanamo ang pagtinabangay sa mga ahensiya sa gobierno, probinsiya sa Davao del Sur, ug mga munisipyo sa pagtubag pinaagi sa aksiyon,  sa tanang isyu nga nasinati sa katawhan,” alias Bogart said.

He also recognized the efforts of the different government agencies from the national down to the local government units and everyone that worked together to put an end to the insurgency problem in Davao del Sur.

Guest of honor and speaker during the opening program was Lt. General Greg Almerol, the commander of the Philippine Army's Eastern Mindanao Command.

Prior to the opening program, a motorcade was held which was participated in by all the municipal governments of the province. It was followed by the flag raising ceremony and releasing of doves to symbolize the freedom of Davsuranons. (JSGD/PIA Davao del Sur/Photos by DavSur PIO)
