MisOr rice sufficiency at 18.33%

MISAMIS ORIENTAL (PIA)--The current status of the irrigated areas in the province of Misamis Oriental, which is currently at 18.33 percent, is not enough to attain rice sufficiency to provide cheaper prices for rice, as shared by National Irrigation Administration-Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin Irrigation Management Office (NIA LAMISCA IMO) Division Manager Elpidio Lucernas Jr. during an interview in 'Talakayan sa PIA'.

Irrigating 2,114 hectares of farmland out of the 5,000 hectare service area and yielding 3,910 kilograms per hectare.

"The land area is not enough to have rice sufficiency in Misamis Oriental since we have not yet attained our service area target since we are in the process of irrigation development," he said.

NIA LAMISCA IMO is fast-tracking its project implementation, which is now at ninety percent for CY 2022. The completion of all the projects is expected to contribute to an increase in rice sufficiency.

Lucernas has also guaranteed that all projects are properly implemented and that no "ghost projects" are being observed.

El Niño mitigation in Normin

With the effects of El Niño being experienced in the country, NIA LAMISCA IMO is currently monitoring all the irrigation systems and has observed that there are reductions in the water supply but that it is still not deficient enough to affect the system. Despite the minimal effects of El Niño, mitigation measures are being implemented by the NIA to ensure that the water supply is properly utilized by its beneficiaries.

Mitigating the effects of El Niño also requires the full participation and cooperation of all the irrigators associations, wherein the implementation of de-siltation of irrigation canals and the observance of cropping calendars are necessary aspects.

NIA assures the public and its clientele that they are doing their best to further improve the irrigated areas and increase rice sufficiency in the province of Misamis Oriental. They are also in constant coordination with the Department of Agriculture (DA) to better serve the farmers. (JAKA/PIA-10/Misamis Oriental)
