159 learners from Digos City, Davao del Sur to undergo exposure on reading

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur (PIA) -- Digos City has a total of 159 learners who are undergoing a recovery program to ensure that they can read before reaching Grade IV.

Dr. Melanie Plenos-Estacio, City Schools Division Superintendent of Digos City, revealed that all the 159 learners are recipients of the Project Labang, which pulls all the 159 Grade III students every three o’clock in the afternoon to have more exposure in reading.

She stressed that reading is a basic tool for understanding.

“If they will understand what they read, it is certain that they can easily be guided,” Estacio said.

She added that the increase in their number of enrollees can be attributed to the COVID-19 infection.

Estacio revealed many private schools closed shop in the city due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said that the Department of Education (DepEd) Digos City Division is one of the areas in Davao del Sur that is recovering from the onslaught of the series of earthquakes in 2019.

“We still have 20 classes in Digos City Elementary School and 15 classes in Digos City National High School that continue to hold classes in temporary learning spaces.  The school-buildings need to be retrofitted to ensure that it is safe ones the students occupy them,” Estacio said.

She noted that it is the aim of the City Schools Division Superintendent Office to increase the English proficiency of all students.

Estacio bared that they will host the regional competition of writers this June 2023 where a total of 5,000 campus-journalists will compete in news reading and newswriting.

“We will know their level of understanding through exposing their talents and abilities through a competition,” she said.   (JSGD/PIA Davao del Sur)
