Fastcraft trips between Masbate, Bicol mainland suspended due to gale warning

Manila-Masbate-Manila flights cancelled, too

MASBATE CITY, Masbate (PIA) – Travel of high-speed ferry or fastcrafts between this city and Bicol mainland was suspended Monday (May 29) due to strong winds and huge waves, the Coast Guard said.

Lieutenant Edgardo R. Aguilar, commander of the Coast Guard in Masbate, said the suspension of travel was due to the gale warning hoisted over the western seaboards of Albay and Sorsogon provinces.

Wind speed faster than 45 kilometers per hour whipped up waves that slammed with a splash taller than a house, according to the state weather bureau’s bulletin.

Trips of roll-on, roll-off vessels and other high-speed ferries weighing above 250 gross tonnage, however, continued.

The Coast Guard also advised fishers and small vessel mariners to avoid setting sail in these seaboards as they are likely to encounter turbulent waves.

No incidents related to the gale warning have been reported to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as of Monday afternoon.

The inclement weather caused by Typhoon Betty (international name: Mawar) also prompted the Cebgo airline to cancel its flight to Masbate City.

In an advisory, Camille B. Andion, station head of 1Aviation Ground Handling Services Corp. for Masbate, said DG 6177/DG 6178: Manila – Masbate – Manila were cancelled due to the typhoon. (PIA5/Masbate)
