180 individuals affected, 2 houses destroyed in 'Lupon' flash flood

CITY OF MATI, Davao Oriental (PIA) - - Some 180 individuals were affected and two houses were totally damaged by a flash flood in Barangay Calapagan, Lupon on May 23, 2023.

Initial reports from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Lupon showed that the flash flood was caused by heavy rains due to the southwesterly windflow and localized thunderstorm.

MDRRMO Lupon also noted that the tree trunks diverted the river flow causing boulders and tree debris to surge towards the Mati-Maragusan Highway.

It also reported a total of P100,215 damage and losses on agriculture in the barangay.

Immediately, the local government unit of Lupon, provincial government of Davao Oriental, Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided food packs, family kits, hygiene kits, kitchen kits, and jerry cans.

Personnel from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) cleared the roads with the boulders and other debris from the flash flood, with the assistance of the Barangay DRRMC, Barangay Peace and Order Committee and the Revitalized Police sa Barangay (RPSB).

Per MDRRMO, LGU Lupon will also give shelter assistance to the families with damaged houses. (PIA Davao Oriental/mlu/ Photos from MDRRMO Lupon)
