BFAR 6 cites 2023 regional fisheries profile, programs

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 6 bared the 2023 fisheries profile of Western Visayas, as well as the different programs and services it offers to the public.

In a media exchange learning of the Antique Capitol Press Corps (ACPC) at the Regional Fisheries Research and Development Center (RFRDC) in Pototan, Iloilo, BFAR 6 Information Officer Rheane Joy Senangote said that 233,296 are registered municipal folks in the region as of January 2023.

With 35,600 registered municipal fishing boats and 251 catcher commercial fishing vessels, Region 6 logged 334,846 metric tons (MT) of fish production as of the 4th quarter of 2022.

Of this volume, aquaculture contributes the largest with 148,219 MT (44%), while municipal capture and commercial capture follow with 113,121 MT (34%) and 73,506 MT (22%), respectively.

The top products of aquaculture in the region are milkfish, seaweeds, and oysters; blue swimming crab, Indian sardines, and squid for municipal capture; and Indian sardines, round scad, and big-eyed scad for commercial capture.

Meanwhile, as of December 2022, the aquaculture facility of the RFRDC in Pototan town was able to produce

1.72 million tilapia fingerlings, almost 144,000 catfish fingerlings, and close to 13,000 ornamental fish fingerlings for fisherfolks, private cooperators, LGUs and the academe, and other clients in the region.

RFRDC Aquaculturist Jenny Ann S. Ercilla is positive that their 2023 target production will be met just as their 2022 output was achieved, but expressed concern over the low water supply during summers and the presence of predators in the facility.

As part of the media exchange learning, members of the ACPC were also toured in the RFRDC hatcheries, aquaponics, and ponds by its technical personnel and Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Information Officer James Earl Ogatis.

DA-BFAR 6 also underscored their training for fish processing and culture technologies, fisheries scholarship programs such as the Fisherfolk Children Educational Grant (FCEG) and Fisheries Industry Leaders Grant (FILG), and the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD), among other programs and services.
