Digos City implements measures to help school children

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) - Digos City Schools Division has lined up measures to help academically school children recover from the pandemic.

In a recent online press conference with One Davao, May 29, City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Melanie Plenos-Estacio highlighted the city's commitment to help learners to bounce back from the effects of the pandamic, where the face-to-face classes were shifted to online or blended holding of classes.

She said that the transition program and remedial classes to help students recover from academic losses were put on hold to strengthen the reading comprehension of students in public schools.

With 42,978 students from Kinder to Senior High School in public schools, Digos City is implementing various programs to support their academic recovery.

“Meron tayong tinatawag na Transition Program and at the same time, daghan ang atong mga bata karon nga ginataga-

an ug remedial classes para makarecover sila sa kanilang academic losses (We have this what we call the Transition program and the the same time, there are many children right now that are provided with remedial classes to recover from their academic losses),” said Estacio.

These initiatives are led by DepEd Digos City Division and supported by Education-major students from local colleges and universities.

"Project Labang" is another program promoted by the city to assist students in overcoming reading comprehension challenges and meeting grade-level requirements.

“Ginascaffold nato, gina bridge nato sila aron mameet nagyud nila ang requirement nga dapat nila matun-an. (We are scaffolding them, creating a bridge for them to meet the requirement that they should learn),” Estacio stressed.

She said that reading comprehension is the foundation for understanding other subjects like Mathematics and Science, which ultimately enhances students' speaking and writing skills.

DepEd has also adopted several strategies to boost reading comprehension, including the Drop Everything and Read program at 3 o'clock, pull-out classes for targeted discussions with selected students, and Extra Reading Classes for retention.

These comprehensive efforts by Digos City demonstrate a commitment to supporting student's academic growth and well-being during these challenging times. (Arquilian Agustin/OJT/PIA Davao)
