PIA DAVAO OCCIDENTAL (PIA) -- The Social Security System (SSS) has a new policy on claiming SSS benefits by surviving spouse and other beneficiaries.
In the recent PIA Davao Occidental and Energy FM Digos radio program, SSS Digos City Branch Manager Jocelyn Tejano-Gopo explained that the agency is preparing to implement the new policy for burial claims through training and seminars, which is expected to take effect around July this year.
Under the new policy, surviving spouses are no longer required to present official receipts when claiming benefits, as they are considered direct beneficiaries. This change aims to relieve those who may have needed clarification about the documentation required in such situations.
However, Gopo emphasized that if there are discrepancies in the address or any other information provided, surviving spouses may still be asked to provide additional proof to verify their identity and claim.
Other payees, such as parents, children, or other authorized relatives who handled the deceased member's contributions, must present a receipt to the surviving spouse or the office and a waiver to claim the said benefits. This measure ensures that the correct person receives the benefits and prevents potential misuse of the funds.
Depending on the member's number of paid contributions and average monthly wage credit, the Funeral Benefit amount was raised from a minimum of P20,000.00 to a maximum of P40,000.00.
Beneficiaries can now receive the check-less Funeral Benefit through an electronic wallet or bank account registered with the SSS. This method is quicker and more practical.
Compared to the former 30-day processing time, the processing time for Funeral Benefit claims has been significantly shortened to 10 working days starting from the submission date of all required documentation.
These changes aim to provide better support and assistance to the beneficiaries of deceased SSS members or pensioners. The increased Funeral Benefit amount will help cover funeral expenses, while the faster processing time and updated payment method will make claiming the benefit more convenient and hassle-free.
Gopo's clarification seeks to streamline the claim process and reduce confusion among beneficiaries. It is crucial for those receiving SSS benefits to be aware of the requirements and guidelines to avoid any delays or issues in the claiming process.
