CHSO urges public to get vaccinated or boostered amid rise in COVID-19 cases

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) -- The City Health Services Office (CHSO) renewed its call to the public to get their COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses following the increasing trend of COVID-19 cases in the city.

Dr. Donnabel Panes of CHSO said they have recorded 394 COVID-19 cases in May  compared to the 169 cases recorded in April.

Although most of the cases are  mild, 96 COVID-19 patients are currently  admitted in the various hospitals in the city. Most  of them are unvaccinated and with comorbidities.

As of May 31, CHSO   recorded the highest health care utilization since December 2022.

"Karamihan po sa kanila, unboostered and unvaccinated, so, really a time to check on your vaccination records, mga kapatid,  dahil kailangan pong updated ang inyong vaccine," Panes reminded.

COVID may not be a public health emergency anymore,  "but is does not mean that we're already out of the woods. It's just telling us, it's not an international concern anymore. But still, we are still watching it out because the transmission is still ongoing," she  stressed.

The  order of  Mayor Benjamin Magalong  for the  mandatory wearing of face mask in indoor spaces is a good move in curbing the COVID-19 cases. We're just protecting our health care utilization. We do not like our hospitals to be overwhelmed with cases coming from COVID kasi marami pa po tayong cases na kailangang tingnan aside from COVID, Panes  said.

The doctor also  reported that one case of Arcturus (subvariant of Omicron)  was registered in the city. The case is a 24-year-old female with no travel history. She was documented last April and result of variant from the Philippine Genome Center just came.

The dominant COVID-19 variant now in the city is the BA 1.9, according to Panes.

Aside from the past holidays and crowd drawing events, one of the drivers in the increase of COVID-19 cases may be the declaration of the World Health Organization that COVID is no longer a public health emergency, and the public has become lax with health protocols. (JDP/DEG-PIA CAR)
