ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The sweet mangoes of Guimaras earned a geographical indicator (G.I.) seal, making it the first product in the country to own such a registration.

According to Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) Deputy Director General Ann Claire Cabochan, a product that bears a geographical indicator is unique to a certain area.

She added that the uniqueness could be possibly due to geographic location or how people in the locality produced a certain product.

Referring to Guimaras mangoes as the "sweetest in the world", the provincial government credited its distinct quality and characteristics to the topography of the island.

It also has a “marabo” texture, a Guimarasnon word which translates to a diverse blend of crunchiness, sweetness and sourness.

Moreover, the moderately rolling to steeply sloping topography and elevation of the province is highly suited for growing "carabao" mangoes which is the variety produced by the island province.

The reputation of Guimaras as source of its famous mangoes was likewise established due to its Manggahan Festival annually celebrated every month of May. (AAL/LMLE/PIA Iloilo/Guimaras PIO)
